“Don’t ask when, which song
To whom I dedicated.
In the dusty wayside
They are lying about for those
Who feel for them.
Have you heard my voice
Have you embraced them in your heart
I don’t know your name
I am giving in your hand
This love of my very own soul”
—Rabindranath Tagore
Countless pebbles were strewn
all over the dust in the open.
I took one in my hand.
It felt soft
and began singing in a liquid voice.
This world turned shadowy; faded out.
Infinity opened its eyes.
I was immersed, melted
owning them all.

This is just beautiful Sumana…loved it.
The image struck me at once – I chose a very similar one, although the poem is quite different! I love the concept of finding the whole universe in a single pebble.
To me the infinity inside a pebble and above us that still makes you feel in the center, maybe we need that image to keep sane.
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous ❤❤
Ah, pebbles in the sand. Deep…
I love stones, the feel and the stories they have to tell.
Beautiful and mystical words, Suma.
I simply love the idea of a pebble singing in a liquid voice. Wonderful.
Oh those singing pebbles. How they enrich our lives and expand our souls. Love your quadrille.
This is absolutely gorgeous ….the pebble singing in your hand, consciousness expanding…….I love “Infinity opened its eyes”….and the oneness with it all. Sigh. I like your poem better than Tagore’s.
The pebbles that he strewn all over were his songs which he promised will be anyone’s who would love them. I think I own them all because I adore them.
Sumana, this is just breath-taking. I have a thing for stones, in fact, have a little bowl with a collection of them here on a nearby bookcase. They speak for the ages, have been around so long. I love Tagore and I suspect he has a bit of competition. These lines delight me:
It felt soft
and began singing in a liquid voice.
I have a collection of stones that seem to sing a song at times. I sometimes will select one and carry it around with me for the day and seems the day opens to adventure.
deep and gorgeous, Sumana! ❤
The gentle soothing power of nature comes through in your words. I especially love the liquid voice of the stone.
Infinity opened its eyes.
I was immersed, melted
owning them all.
One has to be careful lest one gets overwhelmed. What is easy may seem insurmountable if one is not focused! Very true Sumana!

Interesting how something as hard as a stone can feel soft, but I know what you mean…especially if they are smooth or polished, they do have that soft feel to them. Beautiful write.
How nice it is to be mesmerized by the beauty of the world around us – even a simple pebble has enough of beauty to make one transfixed. 🙂

I liked the idea of holding one and, with the right perspective, owning them all.
Wonderful, true words.
Both poems are lovely, yours and Tagore’s, and so is the picture.
Very deep Sumana ~ Beautifully written ~
