I wonder

if in a previous birth

I was a golden daffodil*

cozying in my plant-mother’s bosom,

and fluttering and dancing in joy,

among a host of my siblings and peers.

and didn’t I weave a dream

in him, a poet,

who would sketch me in his words

while he wandered lonely as a cloud.

*Narcissus /nɑːrˈsɪsəs/ is a genus of predominantly spring perennial plants in the Amaryllidaceae (amaryllis) family. Various common names including daffodil,[notes 1] daffadowndilly,[3] narcissus, and jonquil are used to describe all or some members of the genus. Wikipedia.

  1. As I was researching for the prompt – and reading quotes, a very common theme was the vanity of artists, writers and poets. That we would spend so much time talking about ourselves. It made me chuckle. On some level so true.

We all suffer from some level of vanity.

Wanting to be noticed. Particularly by one who would take the time, to capture every detail. To look even at the little things of us. To notice us.

    Lovely write sumana.

I had wondered where you went but figured you might be catching your breath after last month. Good to see you. Hope all is well.

  2. How wonderful it is to see ourselves as part of the world as flowers, trees, even the sea as we live our lives being part of this beautiful Earth, and perhaps the daffodils as they nod are thinking the same! Whata beautiful poem Sumana.

  3. “didn’t I weave a dream
    in him, a poet,
who would sketch me in his words
While he wandered lonely as a cloud” — of course, yes!
“That floats on high o’er vales and hills,”!!
    Beautifully done, Sumana!

  4. This is so beautiful, not to mention wistful! I’m sure his sketched words wouldn’t hold a candle to the ones supplied by you here. Lovely.
