That city has gobbled up
the geyser of fireflies that rose
from the heart of night,
dancing in tandem with them-
in each of its breath
come out a cremation ground
and a graveyard
dancing in tandem-
that city has a usual sunrise-
birds sing and take to their wings routinely-
children hopscotch on pavement before boarding the yellow bus-
life dances
As if there is nothing to fear…..
Posted for my prompt ~ City @ Poets United Midweek Motif
Life can be incredibly resilient, as resilient as the children (and the young at heart)… who dare to play hopscotch on sidewalks with cracks big enough to suck a foot and twist an ankle.
….if only….
A poem of contrasts luv the geyser gobbling city which dances the feet of innocence in hopscotch

Thanks for a very interesting prompt today Sumana

Aw…Thank you, thank you dear….
As if! When fireflies are replaced by crematorium ash fields and graveyards, we should have a reasonable fear and keep our eyes on the birds. So many of us lost childhood magic in city streets.
The curse of adulthood, is to our innocence and optimism that the world will be better place, tomorrow. Replacing it, with fear and dread that it’ll get worse.
Lif dances, birds sing, the sun rises….and a million stories and crises play out in the city streets. Wonderful, Sumana.
I love the image of a ‘geyser of fireflies’ rising from the heart of night, Sumana, and the scene in the final lines is so vivid:.
‘that city has a usual sunrise-
birds sing and take to their wings routinely-
children hopscotch on pavement before boarding the yellow bus’.-
This is beautiful Sumana!
I like the seeming innocence that plays out
in the midst of a concrete jungle. Nicely done.
Sometimes as humans we deny the circle of life, being unprepared for its ending or refusing to discuss it but it is a constant and follows us like a faithful dog.

One can easily disassociate oneself from all the humdrum and mind one’s own business!

Children so resilient.
Wow.. a stunner!
Your words perfectly capture the mood of the quite troubling image, the dark night seeming ablaze.
And then the beauty of daylight when life returns to itself, to the city and life dances indeed.
Much enjoyed!
